About Council Tax Challenger
Council Tax Challenger helps UK homeowners answer one question: is my home in the wrong council tax band? We compare your band against similar neighbouring properties using official Valuation Office Agency (VOA) data, estimate what your home was worth in 1991, and build the evidence pack the VOA expects when you challenge. The challenge itself is submitted by you, for free, through the official gov.uk service.
Council Tax Challenger is a product of Comtev Ltd, a UK company. We are not affiliated with the VOA, HMRC, or any government body, and we never charge a percentage of your refund.
How our checks work
When you enter a postcode we pull the current council tax band for every property in that postcode from official public VOA data. We combine that with property attributes, sold price records from HM Land Registry, and energy performance (EPC) data to find genuinely comparable homes: the same type, similar age, and similar floor area, the matching rules the VOA itself applies to challenge evidence.
The paid evidence pack (£9.99) adds an estimated 1991 valuation, a case-strength score, and a written case summary you can paste into the gov.uk challenge form. If the evidence for your property is weak, the pack says so plainly. A challenge can move a band up as well as down, and we would rather tell you not to submit than sell you false confidence.
Our editorial standards
Every statistic in our guides comes from a named primary source, usually gov.uk, the VOA, the Scottish Assessors Association, or the Valuation Tribunal Service, and each guide lists its sources and the date it was last updated. Council tax figures change every April and the VOA publishes challenge statistics each year, so we review time-sensitive pages when new figures are released.
